After nearly 5 years of placing people in gamedev, here are 3 surprising things I've learned along the way: 1. It was always hard to be a junior Today there are 282 vs 1777 jobs on hitmarker in favor of Mids and Seniors. But even when money from investors was flowing in ungodly amounts, studios were more inclined to hire experienced people. My conspiracy theory is that junior people had it easier back then because regulars and seniors just weren't available for studios. Sometimes because salaries were inflated, sometimes they literally couldn't land the hire, because there were multiple offers on the table for candidates.  Instead of saying it's not a great time to be a junior, we should just admit it's not a great industry to be one. 2. Most people are playing less than I expected When I started I thought everyone here played games all. the. time. And I thought I was the odd one out with my heavily limited playtime. Turns out there are more people like me, who are just playing a couple of hours per week or sometimes not at all. There are of course the opposites who wish they played more (looking at you Michal Witkowski 😎) 3. You kinda need to be into games Even if your role has nothing to do specifically with production, having an interest in games or playing them in your own time it's ALWAYS a green flag. I knew it might be the case, but what was surprising is that it's true for literally every role in a studio. It's not like not playing them eliminates you from getting the accountant job. It doesn't (I hope). But the topic "What are you playing" somehow always finds its way and sneaks into the conversation. What are your surprise learnings?

This is going to annoy some people, but I see this too often, especially from grads and amateurs. You are not a game designer, game artist, game tester, game writer, and game programmer (at the same time). Your either a solo dev or you have a single role within one discipline (can bounce around in that discipline i.e. art, design, programming, etc.) with potential to have some capacity and knowledge in other disciplines. This is especially the case if you want to be hired with in the #videogameindutsry, maybe not as much in other industries. In other words if you are a junior don't do the below. The gaming industry is in shambles. It should not take over 200 applications to land a handful of interviews. To be perfectly clear, I am not saying every application should result in an interview, but one interview for every 40 applications is just ridiculous. It seems to me that this affects juniors the most. I have applied to several entry-level programming positions and have been turned down because of a "lack of experience". Entry-level no longer means entry-level! Perhaps this is why indie devs have become so popular? We should be trying to make entering the industry easier, instead of recycling the same devs. It seems that the audience would welcome a fresh generation of game devs. Just look at the state of AAA games at the moment. Players are tired of rushed development aimed at keeping the shareholders happy. We want polished and playable games, not a new game every year. Personally, I would gladly wait 2-3 years if it means a bug-free experience. Anyway, that concludes my little rant about the current state of entering the gaming industry. Switching tech stacks in the gaming industry can be overwhelming! 🎮🔄 As someone who has been in games over 7 years, I've identified two main categories of engineers: Low Level Engineers: These are the toughest out there. They work on developing and enhancing game engines. Hands-on experience with C++ and game libraries like DirectX and OpenGL is essential. High Level Engineers: They work using existing game engines such as Unity, Unreal, Cocos, Roblox Studio, and Game Maker. Each engine has its own programming language, interface, physics system, and animation system. Although slightly easier than low-level engineering, it still presents numerous challenges. As a High Level Engineer, the market demands and saturation can make us think about switching tech stacks often. The imposter syndrome sometimes hits, but the core concepts remain the same: - Creating game assets - Designing game UI - Developing animations - Using code to bring game systems and assets to life The industry is tough, but understanding these game development concepts allows for smoother transitions between tech stacks. Interview question: What games do you play? A common question for those interviewing in the video game industry. Here's the thing, over the years I've consistently found those who play table top games are some of the best, most creative, and productive people I've worked with on video games. We all play video games, yet games are not limited to digital, they include many other aspects, like table top (think board games, card games etc.) So when you're interviewed next, and you're asked the game question, don't be shy at including Uno, Ticket to Ride, Pokemon or whatever other games you might be playing with friends and family. Table top games have been infuencing digital interactive video games for decades, and continue to do so. It's a super power not a career limiter. BTW, if you have kids, check our Peacable Kingdom games. These are incredible cooperative games aimed at kids, where you all play together to beat the game, not each other. Want to stand out above a crowded job market? I just put together a custom Unreal 5.4 project that has fully working multiplayer with quality that is approaching AAA. This project will serve as the foundation for Monthly Challenges where professionals from ALL disciplines can choose challenges to tackle and learn the ins and outs of Unreal while creating portfolio pieces with tangible experience. I did end up dropping a few hundred 💸💸💸, which was not the original plan, but I quickly found out how hard it was to find AAA quality content. I'm still going to offer these challenges for FREE to all, because it felt right. 🎉 To uphold Epic's licensing terms with content you must work on this project under one condition: You are part of the GameDevSG Team, working on a game (for portfolio purposes only and cannot be distributed outside of the GameDevSG Discord).
